Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge
A unique 55-acre refuge protecting endangered species and rare native plants along the San Joaquin River Delta
About Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1980, the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is California's smallest national wildlife refuge, but it plays a crucial role in protecting some of the state's rarest species. This unique ecosystem represents the last remnant of the extensive sand dune system that once covered much of the San Joaquin River Delta.
Endangered Species Protection
The refuge is home to three federally endangered species found nowhere else on Earth: the Lange's metalmark butterfly, the Antioch Dunes evening primrose, and the Contra Costa wallflower. These species have adapted to the unique sand dune environment over thousands of years.
Conservation Efforts
Ongoing efforts to restore native plant communities and remove invasive species.
Scientific studies monitoring endangered species populations and ecosystem health.
School programs and public tours to raise awareness about conservation.
Limited public access to protect sensitive species while allowing educational visits.
The Lange's Metalmark Butterfly
Perhaps the most famous resident of the refuge is the Lange's metalmark butterfly, which depends entirely on the naked-stemmed buckwheat plant for survival. This butterfly has one of the most restricted ranges of any species in North America, making the refuge's protection efforts critical for its survival.
Educational Programs & Research Events
The refuge hosts educational programs for schools, universities, and conservation organizations. These programs provide valuable learning opportunities about endangered species conservation, ecosystem management, and the importance of biodiversity.
