Accessibility includes the journey to the door.
An accessible portable restroom needs a usable approach, enough room to enter and maneuver, and a placement surface that remains firm and stable. A wide unit on uneven grass or beyond a step does not solve the access problem.
Confirm the unit and the site together
- Ask for the actual accessible model and its documented compliance features.
- Review doorway clearances, grab bars, interior maneuvering space, and entry.
- Connect the unit to the event by an accessible route; review any ramp and landing.
- Keep signs, queues, cables, furniture, and vehicles out of the route.
- Provide an appropriate handwashing arrangement that guests can also reach.
How many accessible units should an event have?
The U.S. Access Board’s ADA guidance describes access to at least 5% of portable units in each cluster. In whole numbers: a cluster of 1–20 units needs at least 1 accessible unit; 21–40 needs at least 2. Separate restroom clusters must be considered separately. Confirm the applicable event, venue, and California requirements for your layout.
A larger accessible model is not automatically an ADA-compliant model. Ask for the manufacturer’s documentation rather than relying only on the word “wheelchair.”
Antioch parks and outdoor celebrations
If a gathering is at Prewett Community Park or another city park, obtain the venue’s permission for equipment and agree on the access route before delivery. Park facilities and operating hours should be checked for your actual event date.
Plan before the rest of the site is filled.
Reserve the accessible restroom position early, then arrange catering, tents, and guest traffic around it. Share a site sketch with the rental request. A level entrance is useful only if guests can reach it from the parking and activity areas.
