About Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve
Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is a 6,000-acre park that preserves the rich mining history of the East Bay. From the 1860s to the early 1900s, this area was home to California's largest coal mining operation, employing hundreds of workers and supporting entire communities.
Historical Significance
The preserve contains remnants of five historic mining towns: Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley, and Judsonville. Visitors can explore the Hazel-Atlas Mine, Rose Hill Cemetery, and various mining artifacts that tell the story of California's industrial heritage.
